Caruth Institute for Engineering Education

The Caruth Institute for Engineering Education (CIEE) has an open position
for a postdoctoral scholar. We are looking for candidates interested in
studying STEM learning in both school and out-of-school learning
environments. Working together on a collaborative team, the
candidate’s responsibilities will include designing, developing, and
assessing ‘Engineering Forward’ STEM learning that prioritizes Science &
Engineering practices and epistemic agency. The postdoc will help
facilitate research activities across multiple sites as well as assist with
the coordination of data collection and analyses, establishing project
timelines, and assisting with locating school/community sites and
recruiting participants. The ideal candidate should have a background in
Learning Sciences, Improvement Science, and/or STEM education, and some
experience or comfort with one or more of the following areas:


   - K-12 education (research or teaching)
      - Discourse Analysis and Qualitative Research Methods
      - Data Sciences
      - Learning Environment Design
      - Designs for equity, diversity, and inclusion Learning Analytics
      - Assessment Design


 The overarching research agenda supports a strong collaborative
relationship between the Lyle School of Engineering’s CIEE and the Simmons
School of Education & Human Development’s West Dallas STEM School (WDSS)
Project. Generous funding has been secured from the Hamon Foundation and
Toyota Foundation to engage in research activities that study connections
among community partners and diverse stakeholders to ensure that learning
environments are ethically designed and promote diversity, equity, and
inclusion.



The postdoc will have the opportunity to collaborate with world-class
education researchers to directly impact the future of education. The CIEE
and WDSS projects are deeply committed to advancing diversity, equity, and
inclusion in all that we do. We are committed to diversity at all levels of
engagement, e.g., on-campus and off-campus community-based youth
‘Engineering Camps’. We strive to foster an equity-focused culture where
members of our communities feel welcomed, safe, and respected. We view our
work on ‘Improvement Science’, that advocates for continuous improvement
with teaching and learning, as an opportunity for collaboration among all
organization groups to create teaching and learning environments that are
accessible to all and to empower diverse learners to develop the next
generation STEM workforce.

This appointment is a one-year fully funded position with possible renewal
for a second year, contingent on a satisfactory performance review after
the first year and continued funding. This position is not remote and will
require relocation to Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area.

*Basic Qualifications  *


Required qualifications include an earned doctorate (at time of hire)
in Learning Sciences, STEM Education, or a related field, as well as
fieldwork experience in K-12 settings or working with K-12 personnel.
Strong methodological training in research/statistics and qualitative
analysis.

Preferred skills and abilities include experience in teacher
professional development, mixed method research design and video
data analysis, and video editing as well as CS development
